Castelli Aero Race 5.0 Short Sleeve Cycling Jersey SS14
Castelli Aero Race 5.0 Short Sleeve Cycling Jersey SS14
The Aero Race 5.0 jersey is the most aero jersey Castelli have ever made weighing in at 98g (large). The Velocity Dry fabric used also makes the jersey dry extremely fast and the compression band around the waist also keeps the pockets in place.

" for such a light jersey i'd wondered if the fabric/stitching on the pockets would be a weak point, but there's no sign of this at all, the design copes well when loading them up
pockets have no sagging or bounce on uneven roads
only slight niggle is the very light fabric catches easily on any velcro, i noticed some slight snags which i think happen when reaching behind and the velcro on the mitts rubs on it
fit is skin tight, but i'm the same size in this jersey as in normal castelli jersey, it's cut for natural riding position, off the bike it gets tighter but undoing the zip a bit solves that
absolutely no flapping even on fast descents
on cool mornings it feels like wearing no jersey
really happy with it, though it would be nice if the styling were a bit madder, like the old tech labs jerseys for instance "
Pros: Attractive, Comfortable, High Quality, Rugged, Lightweight, Good Fit
Cons: needs more scorpions

" got this as a spare, it folds almost as small as a standard inner tube and is pretty light
not the world's best tub, especially given the price, but it's been used a couple of times after a puncture beyond repair with sealant
minimum rated pressure is really high, but 120psi is about as high as my minipump goes, however it's rideable at this pressure "

" after years of overshoes that leaked and/or wore fast, i decided to have another go
about a dozen wet rides so far, no sign of wear, no leaks
the ankle is nice and high, i can use them with tights over the top, so water doesn't run down the cuff
good zip, doesn't dig into the leg, decent reflective strip
the sizing is the only thing to watch, i got the xxl for size 46 and it's a good fit on my road shoes, which are not bulky ones, so be prepared to size up "
Pros: Durable, Attractive, Comfortable, High Quality, Lightweight, Good Fit, cute scorpions

" tyre got a small nick which punctured the tube
it was a slow puncture, still plenty of pressure in the tyre when i stopped, so i don't think it was a large hole
followed the instructions, but the the puncture never sealed, tried all the tips i remembered from the youtube demo
even tried taking out the valve to completely deflate and leave it a while before trying to inflate, eventually gave up "

" i got these to ease taking tubs off cf rims, only needs one lever to do it
they're very strong/stiff, but the edges are all smooth
the end is blunt enough to prise the tub up without damaging the sidewall, then, once there's enough space to slide the whole lever through the gap, it can be used two-handed to slide it along and release the glue
no danger of nicking/gouging the rim "

" looking for a smaller/lighter pump, i thought i'd bite the bullet and get one of these
after 6 months use, no regrets, it's light, lovely quality, and absolutely no problem getting to 110psi (and higher if you need)
i also got the alternate hose with pressure gauge, it directly replaces the standard one
i've dropped it a few times, no damage
only gripe is that as the pressure goes up, the metal fitting at the end gets *really* hot as the cf doesn't conduct the heat away, in warm weather i've had to pour water on it to cool it down - it was too hot to touch! "

" but let down by poor design...
the side pockets are really not good, small, hard to access, anything that isn't flat gives uncomfortable bulges - bunch of keys? ouch!
the central rear pocket is deep, but too far back for easy access
there's a good reason for the traditional three rear pocket design - it works - assos should've stuck to it
i think the side pockets are just an afterthought, they double as extra ventilation holes, and the assos logo zip pulls are not the best ergonomically
fit is close, treat the chest size in the chart as maximum, so size-up if in doubt
cuffs are excellent, sleeve and back length are good, the built-in hood/mask is very good
the jacket is described as windproof, but there are two mesh areas at the armpits, these cannot be closed, so absolutely not windproof, as i found on my first ride with two nasty sub-zero blasts of air coming through, after 20 minutes i'd had it
really have to wear a base layer with it otherwise the direct cooling sucks heat from the core very fast, imho a terrible design decision by assos
overall extremely disappointing, especially given the price "
Pros: Attractive, High Quality, Good Fit
Cons: poor pocket design, not actually windproof

" i've had this about a year, but can only face it when the weather is really bad
it's stable, supplied with a skewer and the front wheel support, which all together keep it really solid even when going hard/out of the saddle
the controller cable can get in the way, it retains bends and doesn't lie flat, would be better if it was made of floppier material
the unit must have mains power, no useful resistance with it, which was a let down as it's no use for warm-up at races
there's a good range of resistance, the controller/features are a bit too fiddly, for instance why have resistance and slope? surely they are the same on a turbo, but it has some useful readouts
works ok with a polaris hrm, but unfortunately not ant+, so doesn't use the cadence sensor on the bike, have to fit the tacx wired one (or not bother!)
the unit shows power, i was skeptical about this, it takes a while to warm up, reading low for 10-15 minutes, but then matches with the srm figure within maybe 5%
the averaging period seems quite long so not good for short bursts, but for longer efforts should be pretty close to actual power
if you want power reading for training and don't have it on your bike, then this is an option if you'll use the turbo a lot
otherwise a more basic turbo is better value as the other features you'd get with a bike computer that you could on the road as well "
Pros: Rugged, High Quality, Adjustable, accurate average power
Cons: fiddly controller/features, needs mains power

Sugar Content

Why is the sugar content so high in the chocolate version compared to the Banana/Vanilla where as the carbohydrate content is similar?
Best answer
Top 50 Contributor
Top 50 Contributor
it's about the taste

cocoa is quite bitter, to make it palatable to most people dextrose (aka glucose) is used to sweeten as well as provide carbs

maltodextrin isn't a sugar, but it is just chains of glucose molecules, the longer the chain the less sweet it tastes

it is metabolised almost as fast as glucose, because as you digest it, the chains are broken down to produce glucose

so maltodextrin is used where the metabolic impact of glucose is intended but without the sweet taste

Size up due to pro fit and aero?

My measurements fall exactly on the XL size of Castelli (105cm chest, 93cm waist, 186cm height), confirmed with other non aero Castelli products.

I wonder if the specific jersey, as being aero and pro fit should be treated sizewise differently, size up or not?
Top 50 Contributor
Top 50 Contributor
i take a medium in this and in other race cut castelli jerseys, measurements about midway between medium and large

sounds like you should get xl

it's cut for riding position, goes tight upright, so don't judge fit off the bike

when you get it, keep the tags on until you've checked fit in case you need to return it, wiggle are good about this

 Veloflex Arenberg Tubular Tyre
Veloflex Arenberg Tubular Tyre
All-purpose tubular ideal for rough terrains like rough roads or cobblestones paved roads.

Is this tire the same as the Veloflex Roubaix but just with black instead of tan sidewalls?

From the specs, it looks like the only difference is the Roubaix has tan sidewalls but the Arenberg has black. Ideally, I'd like to go for black sidewalls so would choose the Arenberg if it has all the other qualities of the Roubaix (which was recommended to me).
