" fits well, fairly open weave is good for warmer rides, but not the most interesting colour scheme
on some jerseys i find the arms too tight, this was much more comfy on the arms and still a good fit everywhere else
rear pockets can hold a pineapple securely and don't seem to suffer from the experience "
Pros: Comfortable, Good Fit, Lightweight, pineapple compatible

" i've used one of these for years, even used every week day fpor 10+ years it is still fine, far more robust than the viscose type
get the 'giant' sizxe, the others are a bit small for all-over drying
i just bought another as i leave one in the changing rooms at the office and wanted one for travel
works well, packs small, lightweight, dries out fast, doesn't get smelly "

" for the last few weeks i've used this during/after training rides
i find it maintains my energy well without getting a sugar surge/sag, no problems with cramp, and after the ride it is good to keep things going until i'm feeling in the mood for a proper meal
it doesn't contain caffeine, so is ok for all day use, and you can then carry some gels/whatever with caffeine if you need to get a kick at some point
the taste isn't sickly sweet, but i still find it most palatable when cool. so usually i make it with chilled water and top up the bottles with ice cubes "
Pros: High Quality, tastes pleasant

" does a good job of cleaning the chain in situ, not as effective as taking the chain off for a deep clean, but fine for more frequent use, i was surprised by the amount of stuff that was stuck to the magnet
there was some splashing from the wet chain, and definitely need to be careful positioning the bike - it takes some force to hold the cleaner and turn the pedals, so the bike can skip about a bit
instructions were clear and concise
whatever the unit is made of doesn't feel like it will break easily, feels like polycarbonate which is nice and tough
the set of cleaner, degreaser and lubricant seems good value "

" simple to install and set up, the (pdf) manual could be better but it was usable
i'm finding the cadence alarm most useful for improving my technique - when i go too slow it beeps, i swear at it to shut up, it beeps some more, i pedal faster, and it shuts up, very simple
the auto timer stop/start and lap detection work well
it is easy to customise the data displays, and also easy to switch between the two main data screens on the move
i'd have liked to see a few more gps-ish features, compared to a 'real' gps it is pretty basic, the altimeter is absolutely barking (but most are), and there's no compass, but the cycling-specific functions are great
my only real gripe is the cadence sensor, and in particular the magnet, garmin needs to realise that tie-wraps are not always the best fixing method
getting the sensor to mount securely on my non-circular chainstay was a pain, i have to watch out that it doesn't slip inward/outward and get crunched, when i get time i'll try and make a better mounting for it
the cadence magnet fixes to the crank with a single tie and a sticky pad, it took just three days for the magnet to be lost (the sticky pad is still stuck to the crank)
almost certainly i caught the tie with my foot, but tht's hardly unexpected for a crank! so i think garmin could do a lot better here
to solve this for now i took the spoke magnet off, its plastic clip has room for two ties to be used to attach it to the crank, giving a much more solid fit than the proper crank magnet had!
then i bought a cheap cateye spoke magnet to go on the wheel (the garmin magnet is stronger/bigger than the cateye, so it worked better that way round)
longer term i think i'll drill a small hole in the (aluminium) crank and thread it to take the screw on the spoke magnet "
Pros: Attractive, Lightweight, Rugged
Cons: poor/weak mounting for cadence sensor and magnet

" swapped my old saddle for this, the difference in comfort is dramatic.
it isn't a heavily padded saddle, nor is it the lightest saddle in the world, but the extra few ounces are worth it.
it has a combination of the gel giving a softer sitting surface, and flexes at the rear to buffer the larger bumps.
the hole along the centre line keeps the pressure off your bits, but in the rain you get a special surprise (unless you have mudguards).
the fore-rear adjustment range marked on the rails is a limited.
the gap between the saddle and rails is too small for some bags etc. - for instance, the standard mount on the topeak aero wedge won't fit - so you may need to buy new mounts or get creative with a hacksaw (on the mount, not the saddle!). "

" after trying various bags and pouches, none of which had enough space and all of which were a hassle to demount/remount (or risk losing stuff to theft), I saw these Carradice SQR bags.
I chose the 'slim' model as it is wide enough to fit folded shirt, trousers etc. for the office without scrunching them up, with room for some shopping on the way home, and the multitool, spare tube, pump, bike lock etc. stashed in the bottom.
there's an internal pouch for keys/whatever, but no external pockets which is a shame.
unclips fast, so easy to remove for security when parked, and when not in use there's just the clamp on the saddlepost rather than the clutter of a rack.
apparently it also acts as a mudguard, haven't been in the rain with it yet, but as I haven't got any mudguards this could be an unexpected bit of luxury.
the way the end cover works needs a little care to make sure nothing inside can find its way out - with no suspension the contents get every bump and hole in the road fed straight through, no way I'd ever put anything delicate in there!
inside, the ends of the bolts that hold on the mounting rails are exposed, ready to gouge fingers if you try to rummage around, so I'll be fitting some kind of rubber caps on these.
there is an accessory kit to turn it into a backpack which seems overkill for the size and looks fiddly to use, but I wish they'd just included a simple shoulder strap that could be stashed under the lid when on the bike.
its not big enough for serious load carrying, but ideal for daily use and even for a few days of lightweight touring.
overall it's the best solution I've found for everyday use, wish I'd discovered it before wasting money on other bags. "

" compared to traditional tyre levers this is just so simple.
slip under bead, clip onto axle, roate, done.
it almost takes longer to describe than to remove the tyre.
haven't needed to use it to fit a tyre back on yet, but I can imagine on winter days it'll be a lot less painful than doing it with frozen fingers. "

Sugar Content

Why is the sugar content so high in the chocolate version compared to the Banana/Vanilla where as the carbohydrate content is similar?
Best answer

Top 50 Contributor
it's about the taste

cocoa is quite bitter, to make it palatable to most people dextrose (aka glucose) is used to sweeten as well as provide carbs

maltodextrin isn't a sugar, but it is just chains of glucose molecules, the longer the chain the less sweet it tastes

it is metabolised almost as fast as glucose, because as you digest it, the chains are broken down to produce glucose

so maltodextrin is used where the metabolic impact of glucose is intended but without the sweet taste

Castelli Aero Race 5.0 Short Sleeve Cycling Jersey SS14
Castelli Aero Race 5.0 Short Sleeve Cycling Jersey SS14
The Aero Race 5.0 jersey is the most aero jersey Castelli have ever made weighing in at 98g (large). The Velocity Dry fabric used also makes the jersey dry extremely fast and the compression band around the waist also keeps the pockets in place.

Size up due to pro fit and aero?

My measurements fall exactly on the XL size of Castelli (105cm chest, 93cm waist, 186cm height), confirmed with other non aero Castelli products.

I wonder if the specific jersey, as being aero and pro fit should be treated sizewise differently, size up or not?
Top 50 Contributor
Top 50 Contributor
i take a medium in this and in other race cut castelli jerseys, measurements about midway between medium and large

sounds like you should get xl

it's cut for riding position, goes tight upright, so don't judge fit off the bike

when you get it, keep the tags on until you've checked fit in case you need to return it, wiggle are good about this

 Veloflex Arenberg Tubular Tyre
Veloflex Arenberg Tubular Tyre
All-purpose tubular ideal for rough terrains like rough roads or cobblestones paved roads.

Is this tire the same as the Veloflex Roubaix but just with black instead of tan sidewalls?

From the specs, it looks like the only difference is the Roubaix has tan sidewalls but the Arenberg has black. Ideally, I'd like to go for black sidewalls so would choose the Arenberg if it has all the other qualities of the Roubaix (which was recommended to me).
