" A SAT NAV for a bike is a great alternative to frequent stops to check or refold maps. I found it most useful when I used Garmin Base camp to plan and upload routes. As a regular SAT NAV, I'm in place A and want to get to B, it isn't likely to find a cycle friendly route, even if you've advised it you want to avoid Highways. I usually do circular routes which can create a problem at the start, because it may decide you're near the end and going in the wrong direction. You feel like you are Beta testing what has the potential to become a great product, but still isn't quite there.
The touch screen is quite soft and suffered a lot of damage when the stationary bike was knocked over; it still works however. Garmin Base camp has improved and the Garmin Connect facility gives you lots of ideas for rides.

I already have the 1:50K micros Sd card for GB from my Garmin 62s.

Will I be able to put it in the Edge 800 unit?

And will it work with Garmin Basecamp. (Or will the map be linked only to the 62S unit and therefore fail to function when connected to a pc running windows vista?)
I've used Open Source European maps cpied onto a micro sd card without problems. Basecamp read them too.

Does the Edge 800 work with Apple Mac or just PC

Yes, Garmin Basecamp works fine on a Mac. Feels like a PC programme, but you can't have everything.
